The Importance of Proper Nutrition and Sleep for Active Children

Childhood lays the foundation for lifelong habits, such as getting good sleep, eating balanced meals, and staying physically active. If your child is a young athlete participating in activities like cheerleading or tumbling, it’s particularly important for them to be supported with proper nutrition and adequate sleep. If your child is attending a summer cheer camp or tumbling classes, make sure they start the day with a healthy breakfast that’s got plenty of protein and fiber to serve as fuel for the day. Pack them a nutritious lunch along with snacks to eat throughout the day—skip the junk food and provide snacks like fresh fruit slices, veggie sticks, whole grain crackers, and hummus. Dinnertime is the perfect opportunity to spend some family time together and enjoy a healthy meal around the dinner table.

Of course, sleep is important as well. Kids need more sleep than adults, and it’s especially important for them to get plenty of sleep if they are physically active. Keep screens out of your child’s room and set a time each night to unplug from smartphones, computers, and televisions. You should also keep the same bedtime every night, even on weekends.

Looking for ways to get your child more involved in physical activity? Tumbling is a fun way to get your child active and engaged in a healthy, social sport. Get your child started in tumbling at Olympia Allstar Cheerleading today!
